How to use Radar systems Guide
We will be using properly simulated radar systems, this to get out of the wc sees all routine and add a deeper layer of naval simulation to the experience.
In order to detect other ships, aircraft etc you will need to setup various sensors on your grid in order to detect potential hostiles. These come in various options:
- Phased array > this is a static sensor with limited coverage but offers higher resolution detection
- Search Radar > These are your familiar spinny radars, they offer 360 degrees coverage of detection however not clear enough to get a proper fire solution at distance.
- Fire control radar > Once something has been detected you can point a fire control radar to improve the resolution of the radar contact and potentially get a fire solution if said contact is deemed hostile.
- IR Sensor > these detect heat sources
- Passive Radar > These will detect if somebody is beaming radar at your grid
How to get started
In order to make use of the system and detect stuff you will require the following on your grid:
- Combat Management System (CMS)
- Radar block ( Phased array, search radars, passive radars )
The CMS will grab data from the Radar blocks and present them to weaponcore, from which point you could engage those targets with your weapons. As long your radar can detect it you should be able to see it.
Datalink
Another method to get targeting data would be through a datalink, using the datalink other grids ( awacs, satellites or any other grid with a radar block and CMS )
In order to transmit or receive data you will need a antenna or laser antenna link, and make sure the CMS datalink settings are set to receive / transmit over network.
This will allow you to either keep your own radar systems turned off and reduce detection, or extend your combat range.
Types of radars
There are various types of radar systems with pro's and cons
Search Radar
These familiar spinning radar systems provide 360 degrees coverage however as they spin they will lose track of targets for a short period.
Phased Array
Phased array panels are very power as they maintain clear vision on the angle they are placed however they are static and will only cover that angle. They blend in nicely with your hull and are harder to get shot than regular search radar systems.
Fire Control Radar
This type is designed to provide high resolution tracking on your targets, when your other radar system detects something these will try to maintain track on targets as the search radar sweeps past.
Passive Radar
This radar doesn't emit any form of radar but rather sees if any radar emissions hits you, if it detects somebody beaming their radar on your it will provide you their location.
